While the Beaumont Independent School District is culling its teaching force to solve the school district’s budget woes, the legal fees budget shows no sign of diminishing.

In Plato’s Laws, the philosopher surmises, “There is no harm in repeating a good thing.” But clearly, that does not apply to criminal activity, a bad thing for both society and the lawbreakers themselves who, by law, face stricter penalties with every recurring infraction. Yet some Orange residents can’t seem to stop repeating their mistakes in spite of those potentially heightened consequences. One of those offenders is 26-year-old Melody Johnson of Orange.

More than 200 children participated in the first-ever Mini-Mudder Romp as part of Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown’s Great Outdoors Day on Saturday, June 21.

Children had a chance to have fun and get dirty as they ran through 23 obstacles including the Saloon Scurry, the Washday Whirlwind, and the Derrick Splash.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office reports emergency responders evacuated some local residents after a business alerted them of a natural gas leak on Wednesday, June 25, at about 8:45 a.m.

Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at about 7:29 p.m., Beaumont Police Department patrol officers responded to the 3100 block of E. Lucas at Galveston to a reported aggravated assault. A female called the BPD 911 Communications Center and advised that a man had just shot at her. Officers arrived to speak with the female, who told them that the man had fired a shot at her as she was in front of a residence in the 3100 block of E. Lucas. The female said that the man shot at her from a house in the 4800 block of Galveston. He fired the shot across E. Lucas Street toward the female.

Close to 2,000 people attended Orange County’s 20th annual Cops N Kids Picnic at Claiborne Park on June 20 for some summer fun, the Orange County Sheriff’s Office reports. Children at the event were treated to tours of emergency vehicles, shown tactical equipment used by SWAT, allowed to get up close and personal with some alligators, a snake and even a tortoise, and had plenty to eat and drink from various booths set up on the park grounds.

Since last summer, scammers have continued to target Entergy customers in Texas and surrounding states. The con artist calls and tells the customer their electric bill payment is past due, and that service will be disconnected within the hour if payment isn’t made.
