As of 8:30 the morning of Tuesday, July 25, the Port Arthur Fire Department terminated the emergency incident at German Pellets. This incident has been ongoing since April 15, and PAFD has had personnel on-site 24/7. The remaining silo temperatures are in the normal range and cleanup of the site continues. PAFD will continue to attend daily meetings and monitor the site until the remaining silos are empty. This incident is one of the longest in PAFD history lasting 102 days.

More than three years after a violent drunken-driving collision left several wounded and thousands of dollars in damages, Jefferson County attorney Dane Dennison was ordered this past week to begin serving a sentence handed down prior to the defendant exhausting his appeals process.

United Way of Beaumont & North Jefferson County distributed nearly $2 million between 19 local partner agencies at an allocation award ceremony on Tuesday, July 18 at the Foundation for Southeast Texas.

The money was raised during United Way’s annual campaign. The money comes from donors, individuals who live and work in the community, as well as corporate donors, said John Rollins, public relations/community impact director for the United Way of Beaumont & North Jefferson County.

Sunday, July 23, around 1:30 a.m., Beaumont emergency services responded to a rail car leaking methyl chloride at the Union Pacific rail yard at 550 Lindbergh in Beaumont, Beaumont Fire Captain Brad Penisson said. HAZMAT crews responded and did determine a small leak was present. The HAZMAT crew corrected the leak by tightening a bolt on the rail car. No evacuations were performed or needed. No injuries came of the incident.

On Wednesday July 26, at 7 a.m., the grade crossing at Cedar Street between 4th Street and Avenue C in downtown Beaumont will be closed to all traffic.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced July 26 that the Child Exploitation Unit (CEU) of his office arrested Roberto Cruz-Lara, 57, of Waco, on one count of possession of child pornography, a third-degree felony. Cruz-Lara could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

In an effort to expand recreational opportunities in the national preserve and provide unique experiences for all, effective October 2017, Big Thicket National Preserve will open a new waterfowl hunting area and permit the use of air rifles for squirrel hunting.

Squirrel hunting has been a popular activity in the preserve for many years. In accordance with Texas regulations, only squirrel (fox squirrel, cat/grey squirrel) may be taken with air rifles.

BEAUMONT - A Houston father and son were each sentenced to federal prison for federal drug trafficking violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston today.

Rolando Delarosa, Sr., 43, and Rolando Delarosa, Jr., 22, both pleaded guilty on Feb. 27, 2017, to conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine and were sentenced to  120 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Thad Heartfield.
