The city of Port Arthur will offer influenza vaccinations Oct. 1 at the Bob Bowers Civic Center, 3401 Cultural Center Drive, and Nov. 2 at the downtown Pavilion, 500 Procter St. The Drive Thru Flu Clinic will be open from 7:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Vaccinations are $10. Adults only.

A Dunk a Cop and Link Sale Fundraiser will be held at the Market Basket on Highway 105 in Beaumont from noon until 3:00 p.m. Friday, September 25, 2015. The event is being hosted by the Injury Prevention Coalition of Southeast Texas, local law enforcement agencies, the Texas Department of Transportation, and Zummo Meat Company to support our local chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (M.A.D.D.).

Gisela Houseman, owner and CEO of The Houseman Companies in Orange, has added $50,000 to further strengthen the Tony Houseman Memorial Scholarship in Speech and Hearing at Lamar University. She also donated equal amounts to existing scholarships at Lamar Institute of Technology and Lamar State College-Orange.

Cory Broom accepts his Golden Apple and $500 check from Education First FCU.

Education First Federal Credit Union has named Cory Broom of Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School its Golden Apple Educator Award winner for the month of August.

As the 2015-16 school year began, Broom was awarded with a Golden Apple and a $500 check from Education First Federal Credit Union in front of his drama students, LC-M staff and many of the parents who nominated him.  Onlookers met inside the high school theater to surprise him with the news.

Accused kidnapper Cody Melton, 35, was indicted Sept. 16 on aggravated kidnapping and aggravated assault family violence charges after the Beaumont man allegedly stabbed his girlfriend and abducted her 4-year-old child in Jefferson County on Aug. 25.

According to the Facebook page for the Kountze Police Department, counterfeit money is being circulated throughout the community, and police need assistance finding the perpetrators. Clerks of every local business are encouraged to check all money received carefully. If counterfeit bills are acquired, KPD suggests keeping the money and calling local authorities, as identifying the person(s) handling the fake currency is essential.

On September 17, 2015, the Beaumont Public Library, in conjunction with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), will host a naturalization ceremony recognizing new candidates for U.S. citizenship at 10:00 a.m.  The ceremony will take place at the Main Library at 801 Pearl St.
