Lamar University

The Lamar University Jack Brooks Chair in Government and Public Service will focus on substance abuse when it hosts the 2013 Brooks Conference Thursday, April 18.

Activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. in the Lamar Institute of Technology Multi-Purpose Center, at Jimmy Simmons Boulevard and East Lavaca. 

Dawn Mathis of the Drug Enforcement Administration in Houston will be the keynote speaker for a luncheon from noon to 1:15 p.m. Other guest speakers include Shane Howard, Jefferson County tax assessor-collector.

A Port Arthur man has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term for stealing paint. 

Gerald Franklin, 47, went to trial for the theft of 5-gallon buckets of paint he stole from an elderly woman in Port Arthur Aug. 2, 2012.

Senior Matthew McAfee of Community Christian School in Orange was selected as a member of the eighth class of the prestigious Mirabeau Scholars at Lamar University and was offered a Mirabeau Scholarship.  The Mirabeau Scholarship is one of the most valuable academic scholarships offered by Lamar University and will cover full tuition, fees, books, room and board, and books.

The young ladies of Girls’ Haven are celebrating after receiving a welcome gift from Harbor Healthcare Systems in the form of a brand new study room.

The official ribbon cutting ceremony for the new study room was on March 22 at 1 p.m. at the facility located on Fannin St. in Beaumont. The recently renovated room features fresh paint, new computers and printers, lovely decorations and comfortable furniture. This room was designed to offer the residents a safe and practical environment for their studies and homework.

Contract bridge crews are preparing for this weekend’s traffic switch on the Neches River bridge (Purple Heart Memorial), according to a press release from The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT). TXDOT says crews will begin the process of shifting eastbound traffic to the westbound bridge this evening, Friday, March 22, at 9 p.m. The process is expected to take two days, stretching into the weekend.
