Gilligan celebrates after 1,300th career win last February.

For the better part of 38 years, head coach Jim Gilligan has been the face of the Lamar University Baseball. The skipper has been around and influenced the program since his playing days back in 1967, but Gilligan has announced his plans to retire at the conclusion of the 2016 season.

Though a handful of roof tarps and downed trees linger, the community appears largely healed.

Hurricane evacuations

Hurricane Rita devastated the Gulf Coast and caused billions of dollars in damages in Texas when it swept through in 2005. Beaumont and Jefferson County were hard hit with hundreds displaced, and it has cost millions locally to repair damages and to rebuild Southeast Texas.

Thursday, Sept. 24, 2015 at 10:38 a.m., police officers responded to a disturbance at Candyland Auto Sales, 1163 S. 11th St. in Beaumont. The caller told dispatchers that Robert Charles Broussard was in the office throwing things and behaving irrationally.

At approximately 10:40 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2015, the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a helicopter crash in Tyler County. The helicopter went down in a field on County Line Road in Tyler County, just off of Highway 190 and approximately 12 miles west of Woodville, Texas.

The annual Texas Adopt-A-Beach Cleanup is scheduled for this Saturday, September 26, 2015 at McFadden Beach, from 9 a.m. to noon. The program, which relies heavily on volunteers, is dedicated to preserving and protecting Texas beaches.
