A man originally charged with murder for the 2012 death of Vidor resident Amber Nicole Guillory and later extradited from the Netherlands pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in Judge John Stevens Criminal District Court on Tuesday, Jan. 12. David Carl Smith, 42, was sentenced to 10 years in prison relative to a plea agreement made with the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office.

A nude and muddy man reported to have been causing a disturbance in Orange over the weekend nearly slipped away from police after wrestling free while they were attempting to detain him, but the officers ultimately prevailed, using their department issued Tasers to subdue the slippery suspect.

Saturday, Jan. 9, at 11:46 p.m., police were dispatched to the 4900 block of Avie Lane in Beaumont after four males in a white Yukon were seen attempting to steal a trailer that had an ATV on it. The caller told dispatch that the suspects hooked the trailer up to the suspect vehicle and left.

A fire that originated at 5425 Spencer also damaged 5435 Spencer.

At 5:45 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016, Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a structure fire reported at 5425 Spencer. When firefighters arrived, they found two houses on fire, 5425 and 5435 Spencer. The home at 5425 Spencer was heavily involved by fire and 5435 Spencer was burning on one side. Both families were able to escape without injury before firefighters arrived.

The fire originated at 5425 Spencer and appears to have been caused by an electrical problem. The house at 5425 Spencer was extensively damaged by the fire. Red Cross was called to assist both families.
