On Aug. 21, a Jefferson County grand jury indicted five teens for engaging in organized criminal activity after the Beaumont Police Department uncovered a number of stolen firearms during a traffic stop.

Criminal District Attorney Bob Wortham announced Aug. 20 that Charles Grant, 52, of Beaumont, pled guilty to three cases of aggravated sexual assault of a child. Judge Raquel West followed the plea agreement between the state and Grant and sentenced Grant to 45 years in the Institutional Division of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

The Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of an auto-pedestrian crash on Highway 69 at about 2:15 p.m. on Aug. 19. The crash took place in front of the Jefferson County Jail and resulted in the death of the pedestrian. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the man killed had just been released from the jail shortly before the collision. 

DPS identified the man as Daniel Montano, 29, of Groves. He was struck by a 2011 GMC pickup and pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Ransom Jones.

On Aug. 15, at about 1:40 p.m. the Port Arthur Police Department's Narcotics and Gun Unit executeed a search warrant at Prince Hall Village Apartments, located at 1021 W. 13th St. During the search, two stolen firearms were recovered along with crack cocaine, ecstasy pills and a large amount of marijuana.

Huntsman Corporation announced Aug. 7 that it has entered into a definitive agreement to sell its chemical intermediates businesses, which includes PO/MTBE, and its surfactants businesses to Indorama Ventures in a transaction valued at $2.076 billion, comprising a cash purchase price of $2.0 billion plus the transfer of up to approximately $76 million in net underfunded pension and other post-employment benefit liabilities.

Southeast Texas schools will be resuming in the coming weeks. This means that school buses will again be delivering precious cargo to and from those schools.

According to Texas law, drivers must stop when a school bus extends its stop sign or turns on their flashing red lights. When a school bus is stopped, drivers must come to a complete stop on all lanes in both traveling directions; this is with the exception of a road with a raised median or barrier.

Wednesday, Aug. 7, at about 3 a.m. the Beaumont Police Department was called to Waffle House located on College Street in reference to a victim of a shooting. 

Their preliminary investigation revealed that several subjects were playing dice outside the restaurant. One of the subjects lost his money during the game and left, returning a short time later with a firearm. The suspect began robbing people who were still playing.
