A Beaumont police officer has been placed on administrative leave following a fatal shooting over the weekend, the Beaumont Police Department reports.

According to a news release from BPD, dispatch received a call in reference to an auto theft suspect at a residence in the 600 block of 23rd street just after 4:30 p.m. on March 5. Responding officers were advised that the suspect was armed.

“My constituents won’t support it,” Beaumont City Councilman Mike Getz said about tax credit apartment construction proposed in the city. Constituents haven’t said anything about supporting the construction elsewhere, however.

Traffic alert from the Texas Department of Transportation:

BEAUMONT – Alternating lane closures on US 69 northbound at Lucas with traffic possibly detoured to the frontage road Sunday night, March 6, 8 p.m.-5 a.m. Crews will be moving concrete traffic barrier.

ORANGE – The inside, westbound lane of Interstate 10 in Orange from Simmons Drive to Highway 87 will be closed nightly Saturday-Monday night, March 5-7, 7 p.m.-6 a.m. to work on the Highway 87 overpass.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Assistant Chief Deputy Rod Carroll announced March 3 that he is resigning from his position at the end of he year after a disappointing finish in the primary election for Jefferson County Sheriff. 

On a Facebook post, Carroll thanked his supporters and friends for their efforts during his campaign for sheriff, and said he is unsure about what the future holds.

A 36-year-old Baltimore, Maryland man has been sentenced to federal prison for child exploitation violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales.

 Ian Christian Anderson pleaded guilty on Sept. 10, 2015 to enticement of a minor and was sentenced to 135 months in federal prison today by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone on March 3.

U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Thursday, March 3, the indictment of two federal inmates charged with killing another inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary in Beaumont.

Christopher Cramer, 33, of Ogden, Utah, and Ricky Fackrell, 32, of Vernal, Utah, were named in the two-count indictment charging them with murder and conspiracy to commit murder returned by a federal grand jury Thursday, a news release from Bales’ office confirmed.

A 24-year-old Mexico native was sentenced to prison in Jefferson County on Feb. 29 for the murder of 25-year-old Port Arthur resident Denzel Washington. Jose Julio Esquivel was sentenced to 40 years for Washington’s murder, 20 years for a separate aggravated assault and 20 years for burglary of a habitation, all to run concurrently.

A woman crossing the street in her power wheelchair was critically injured March 3 after being struck by a vehicle near Central Mall in Port Arthur.

Police in Beaumont have released the identity of a woman found dead on the train tracks March 2.

The Beaumont Police Department reports officers responded to Broadway at First Street in reference to a deceased person at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday night. When police arrived, they discovered a black female deceased on the railroad tracks. It was apparent to officers that the woman had been run over by a train. Investigators reportedly found no evidence of foul play.

The victim has been identified as Bertha Thomas, a 47-year-old Beaumont woman.
