Orange and Jefferson county sheriff’s offices are conducting a death investigation after a body was discovered in the Neches River near the Purple Heart Memorial Bridge this past weekend.

According to the report from the OCSO, the body was found Sunday, May 5 behind Gerdau Steel Mill near the Port of Beaumont. Orange County Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Judge Derry Dunn ordered an autopsy.

With less than four years in the Port Arthur Independent School District superintendent’s seat, Dr. Johnny Brown has accepted an early buy-out package, which will effectively end his employment with PAISD June 30. Brown announced his resignation March 28, saying he would fulfill the remainder of his contract – until September 2014 – before leaving his post.

After more than two weeks of testimony in the capital murder trial of convicted Jefferson County courthouse shooter Bartholomew Granger, jurors have decided the self-described “Mr. Hyde” will be put to death.

The death penalty for Granger comes after a week’s worth of recorded jailhouse phone conversations were presented to jurors during the sentencing phase of the trial. This prompted Granger to make sudden outbursts, cursing at jurors and attorneys in open court. As a result, Granger’s defense questioned their client’s sanity.

BISD is redistricting as part of a constitutional mandate that requires voting entities to re-evaluate their district lines after each census to ensure fair representation to all the population.
