Port Neches City Hall

The city of Port Neches had a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday, Jan. 10, to celebrate the construction of the new Port Neches City Hall at 1005 Merriman St. In addition to continuing services previously provided by the city hall, the new facility is also designed to act as an emergency operations center.

On Friday, Jan. 11, shortly after 12:30 a.m., Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a structure fire reported at 5090 Sassafras. When firefighters arrived, the kitchen and dining area were heavily involved with fire. Firefighters were able to control the fire within 15 minutes but were on the scene until after 3 a.m. due to hot spots.

With an increased awareness of the dangers concussions pose to football players from the NFL down to Pee Wee football, the NCAA now requires all Division I member institutions to have a concussion management plan in place for its student athletes to employ policies to reduce and treat occurrences of brain injury.

Lamar University head athletic trainer Josh Yonker said he is committed to doing everything he can to keep his athletes safe after a suspected concussion.

The 83rd session of the Texas Legislature began this week, and it was a classic “good news – bad news” scenario with Comptroller Susan Combs reporting that increased state revenue forecasts mean that unlike the $27 billion shortfall faced in 2011, lawmakers are looking at $8.8 billion in unspent revenue in the current budget cycle. That represents a $35 billion swing in just two years so things are looking up, right?
