Country Music Hall of Famer, Grand Ole Opry member, Kennedy Center honoree, and local born-and-bred singer/songwriter George Glenn Jones died Friday, April 26, at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. He was hospitalized April 18 with fever and irregular blood pressure. He was 81.

Four contestants remain in Season 12 of “American Idol,” and one is from Southeast Texas — Kree Harrison of Woodville. If Harrison makes it through this week’s elimination round and is in the final three, a slew of events will be held Saturday, May 4, and expect the “American Idol” cameras to be in town for the homecoming concert and activities.

The Beaumont Convention and Visitors Bureau, in collaboration with the U.S. Travel Association, will celebrate National Travel & Tourism Week May 4-12.

One of the most high-profile capital murder trials in Beaumont’s history has ended with a verdict of guilty for Jefferson County Courthouse shooter Bartholomew Granger, but sentencing the murderous "Mr. Hyde" may take longer than expected. 

Granger seemed unmoved by the verdict Tuesday, April 30, but eventually shouted at prosecutors and jurors in open court on Wednesday and Thursday.

With some $47 million in the bank in oil royalties from the Beaumont Municipal Airport, the city of Beaumont is gearing up to begin its first major infrastructure project using the newly -acquired funds to revamp Seventh Street from Laurel to Interstate 10.

City Council approved the lowest bid Tuesday, April 30, awarding the project to Brystar Contracting Inc. for a total price of $6,075,569.55.

When the Washington, D.C. District Court announced that the Beaumont Independent School District trustee election would be placed on hold and not be validated for May 11, it also asked the interested parties in the case to submit additional information. The case was heard before the court to deliberate whether or not a Texas 9th Court of Appeals ruling constituted “voting changes” that would need to be pre-cleared through the Department of Justice.
