Monday, Oct. 10, Bishop Curtis Guillory announced in a statement that he has joined “his brother bishops” throughout Texas in calling for abolishment of the death penalty.

Guillory says the death penalty “does not correspond to the common good but actually does great harm.”

Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 9:42 p.m., Beaumont police responded to a report of gunshots in the 2800 block of McFaddin Street. The caller told emergency services that someone tried to rob him and may now be dead.

Officers arriving on scene found a 35-year-old Beaumont man with multiple gunshot wounds laying in the apartment parking lot on Sixth Street between McFaddin Street and North Street.

Beaumont Fire-Rescue units responded to a structure fire in the 4600 block of Dallas Street on Wednesday, Oct. 12, around 2:15 a.m.

Firefighters arriving on the scene found the flames coming through the roof of the home. They made a quick attack and extinguished the fire, confining damage to one area of the roof and the room directly below.

An auto-pedestrian collision occurred on I-10 in Orange County Tuesday, Oct. 11, around 8:30 p.m., according to TxDOT. The crash was on the eastbound service road near Cow Bayou.

Michigan resident Youssouf Tandia, 45, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Simonton.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, Vidor ISD released a statement that clowns will not be allowed in this year’s homecoming parade.

Vidor ISD administrators “respect the work of the Shriners” and still welcomes the organization to participate in the parade, but asks that they “forego clowns this year.”

This statement comes after social media frenzies with rumors of clown attacks throughout the nation, including a threat to BISD last week, as reported by the Examiner.

Just after midnight on Wednesday, Oct. 12, Nederland, Port Neches, and Groves Fire Departments responded to a house on fire in the 200 block of 17th Street. The occupant evacuated the building as firefighters arrived, according to a statement.

All firefighters called out to the scene reported back to the station safely.

The house fire is still being investigated.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, Beaumont City Council approved the termination of their lease with the Beaumont Yacht Club at 560 Marina Drive after almost 29 years. I

n February 2016, the City approved a month to month lease agreement for the Beaumont Yacht Club while they were negotiating the sale of the property and appraisal. According to previous council minutes, the City conducted the appraisal for its value and “to establish the amount of rent payments for a long-term lease.” The Beaumont Yacht Club has been renting from the City for $2,500 a month during this interim period.

Tuesday, Oct. 11, Beaumont City Council approved the renewal of lease agreements with the Bar C Ranch for the Southeast Texas Auto Theft Task Force during their approval of the consent agenda.

The documents attached state that the council’s approval allows the city manager to execute a three-year lease extension for suites C, D and E of 2430 West Cardinal Drive, the location of the Southeast Texas Auto Task Force office and warehouse space. Suite C’s lease rate is $1,755 per month and Suites D and E are being leased at $2,232 per month.

Christus Southeast Texas Foundation unveiled a 7 ft. bronze of Jesus Christ Tuesday, October 11 in front of St. Elizabeth Hospital. The Foundation worked with artist and sculptor Marsha Elmore, originally from Southeast Texas, to acquire the statue.

The Pig Stand No. 41 on Calder Avenue in Beaumont is no more. Tuesday, Oct. 11, heavy machinery knocked down what remained of the historic establishment.

The iconic landmark was built in 1941, but has been shuttered since 2006. In 2010, the Society for Commercial Archeology added the Beaumont landmark to its list of the 10 most endangered roadside places in the United States after its new owners announced their intention to demolish the building and construct a convenience store.
