Broughton Hand receiving Legion of Honor medal

U.S. Army veteran Broughton “Brodie” Hand, 92, of Anahuac received France’s highest award — the Legion of Honor medal — last month for his efforts to liberate France from Nazi occupation during World War II.

Orange Councilwoman Annette Pernell encourages citizens to attend a town hall meeting on Saturday, March 23, to voice their opinions on the erection of a Confederate Veterans Memorial Park in Orange. City officials, local clergy and civic leaders intend to meet to discuss the planned construction at 10 a.m. at the American Legion Lloyd Grubbs Post 49 located at 108 Green Ave. A representative of the National Action Network will be present as a moderator for the event.

The Sabine River on the Texas/Louisiana border was the scene of some serious bass fishing this past weekend, and in the end Jasper bass fishing pro Todd Faircloth won with a four-day total of 49 pounds, 6 ounces and took home a $100,000 check. He bested second-place finisher Dean Rojas by 6 pounds, 10 ounces.

One man was arrested after police reported he was found with crack cocaine Monday night in Orange. According to the report, the man tried to tell police the rock-like substance was sheetrock.

A 46-year-old Port Arthur woman who pleaded no contest Tuesday, Feb. 19, to two counts of aggravated assault and admitted her guilt in a collision on U.S. 69 that caused the death of a Groves man more than a year ago was sentenced Monday, March 18, to serve five years in jail and pay two $500 fines.

For students to be included on the President’s List, they must have earned a 4.0 GPA for the semester. Students on the Vice President’s List must have earned a 3.40 to 3.99 GPA for the semester.
