Two Lamar Institute of Technology students earned medals at the National SkillsUSA Competition held June 24-28 in Kansas City, Mo.

Kenneth Ross, a utility line technology student, earned a silver medal in job skill demonstration open. In this contest, competitors demonstrate and explain an entry-level job skill. His advisor was Rusty Koenig, program director of utility line technology.

At least three train cars derailed after a flaw in a new set of tracks gave way. 

According to port workers on the scene, moments after the track gave way about 1:30 p.m. Thursday, July 4, three grain cars halfway through a lengthy train jumped their tracks and ended up on their sides behind the Beaumont Civic Center.

A pedestrian fatality occurred on July 2 at the intersection of Mormon Church Road and FM 92 in Silsbee.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, the accident took place at about 6:08 in the evening. Elton Mire, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Kathy Simpson after a Dodge pickup truck struck him while he was riding his bicycle. The truck also hit a Toyota passenger vehicle that was stopped at the intersection.

An Orange man is dead after wrecking his vehicle Tuesday, July 2, near Jack Brooks Airport in Nederland.

One man is in custody and another suffered minor injuries after a stabbing in Beaumont’s Old Town. 

Police responded to the home about 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 2 in the 2200 block of Evalon to find one man distraught and another with a stab wound to his back.
