AUSTIN, from TSUS – One of the four finalists selected in the search for Lamar University’s next president has withdrawn from the process, narrowing the field of candidates to three. John R. English, Ph.D., dean of the College of Engineering at Kansas State University, withdrew from the search for personal and professional reasons. The three remaining finalists are:

Police arrested 39-year-old Henry James Walker of Orange for public intoxication after he kicked in his ex-girlfriend’s door in the 400 block of Decatur St. in Orange, according to reports from the Orange Police Department (OPD).

On any given day, Beaumont’s Jones-Clark Elementary School is bustling with activity. When company is expected, the atmosphere at the campus is only amplified. On a recent Friday, when Jones-Clark staff and students were expecting a list of the city’s who’s who, the energy was hardly containable.

Local athletes competing in the equestrian Special Olympics are getting a leg-up on the competition after a local Boy Scout built and donated competition-grade equipment for use at the Stable-Spirit horse ranch in Fannett.
Joseph Black, 18, of Troop 239 in Fannett, built a custom ramp and gates for the local Special Olympians for use in trail-riding competitions and events all over Texas. By providing a competition-grade atmosphere at the ranch, Black said the athletes will have a much better chance of bringing home the gold.

It was a different time then.
Throughout the early 1900s all the way to the late 1960s, Beaumont was booming and new faces filled the streets at all hours of the day and night. Prostitution, gambling, crime and police corruption were commonplace. Since then, things have quieted down a bit and many who saw Beaumont’s heyday have come and gone. With them went much of the colorful history of early Beaumont.
But one Beaumont police officer is working to preserve that history.
What started as a small tour for youngsters has since grown into more than just a walk down memory lane.

When Daddio’s Burger opens next week on the corner of Calder and West Lucas in Beaumont, it will be at least the seventh restaurant at that location. Considering the building was erected more than 50 years ago, that is not a bad track record – and a lot of good food has come out of the various kitchens there.

There is a banner hanging on the outside wall of Austin Middle School proclaiming the Beaumont Independent School District a National Model School District according to the National League of Cities. Underneath the name of that respected organization in small type are the letters NBC-LEO, which stands for National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials. As it happens, the immediate past president of that group is Audwin Samuel – a Beaumont city councilman and former BISD trustee.

Chelsea Tipton II isn’t your typical maestro.
“There aren’t many black conductors,” said the three-year conductor of the Symphony of Southeast Texas.
In a classical music industry dominated by Anglo-Saxon composers such as Mozart, Handel, and Bach, Tipton is breaking the mold and interpreting humankind’s most important musical masterpieces in a way everyone can appreciate.
“It’s hard to turn the music off,” he said. “There are historians who study the fabric of music and there are performers. I kind of fall in that (latter) category.”

Local EMTs and other participants received tactical SWAT training Tuesday, Feb. 26, to coach them in how to react in violent, volatile situations. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and the Lamar Institute of Technology’s EMS Division hosted the “Care under Fire” drill at the former Air National Guard building at First Street and Vitterbo Road in Beaumont on the grounds of the Jack Brooks Regional Airport.
