October is Texas Archaeology Month, and the Jefferson County Historical Commission is hosting a regional workshop in celebration on Oct. 12 from 2-4 p.m.

This week, Mrs. Ashley Kelly encouraged her students to meld creativity into their science classes.

“They learn so much more when they actually do hands on versus reading from a book," Kelly explained. 

Kelly teaches both seventh and eighth grade science and ninth and tenth grade biology at Community Christian School in Orange, according to administrative assistant Kara Dewberry.

The middle school students wrote biographical articles about a scientist of their choice and dressed like their scientist for the day.

The City of Beaumont is hosting its annual Fire Prevention and Family Safety Festival on Saturday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. The event will be held at the Fire Museum of Texas at 400 Walnut St. in downtown Beaumont.

Saturday, Oct. 29, the Texas Energy Museum will host its annual outdoor Dinosaur Day from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Lamar University Earth Science faculty and students plan to help attendees unearth actual fossils by washing excavated dirt through screens and analyze fossils through microscopes, as well as exhibit other fossils. Presentations from paleontologists and other hands-on activities, such as cleaning dinosaur bones and practicing field techniques to unearth fossils, are also scheduled.

TxDOT announced on Sept. 29 that plans are being made to widen I-10 from Winnie to Hamshire Road, according to a statement.

The Texas Transportation Commission awarded a $43 million contract to Williams Brothers Construction. This project is the first phase in a series of four that will expand I-10 from two lanes to three lanes from Winnie to Beaumont.
