In an statement from the Orange County Sheriff’s Office (OCSO) and Sheriff Keith Merritt, the sheriff said he and his staff are saddened to announce the loss of a valuable member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Eight kids from across the country are proving that you don’t need to be an adult to help out bats. These kids are members of the “Bat Squad,” a group of young people who will be introduced to schools across North America in a four-part live webcast series to be launched online at BatWeek.org during the third annual Bat Week, held this year from Oct. 24-31.

Sunday, Oct. 23, at 2:00p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety received a report of a two vehicle crash at the intersection of US 69 and FM 1003 in Hardin County.

A Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound in the outside traffic lane on US 69. A Dodge passenger vehicle was traveling northbound on US 69. The driver of the Dodge made a left turn into the crossover, failed to yield and pulled out in front of the motorcycle. The motorcycle slammed into the passenger-side of the Dodge and was thrown from his bike.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast in Port Arthur held a free wildlife extravaganza and children’s art show on Saturday, Oct. 8. This family fun day was held to celebrate a new wildlife art exhibit featuring pieces from Houston artist Vickie McMillan and Port Arthur artist Albert Faggard.

At approximately 2:30p.m., the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) received a report of a two vehicle crash on US 69 in Hardin County. The crash occurred approximately one mile south of Highway 327.

A 2004 Ford pickup truck was traveling northbound on US 69. A 1997 Chevrolet pickup truck was traveling southbound on US 69. For an unknown reason, the driver of the Ford crossed the center dividing line and struck the Chevrolet pickup truck head-on.

This summer, the Texas Action for Healthy Kids recognized the Little Cypress Intermediate School as a “school of success” for their new inclusive playground Stay and Play.

The recognition was based off their year-end report, submitted in a grant to fundraise for Stay and Play.

The playground is handicap accessible and includes components for autistic children and a rubberized cushioned surface.

The Museum of the Gulf Coast is opening its doors to Port Arthur third-graders throughout the months of October and December. In addition to touring the museum, each child will receive their very own dictionary, courtesy of the Rotary Club of Port Arthur and Motiva.
