Beaumont’s Pride festival started in 2014 and had between 2,500 and 4,000 attendees annually, according to former volunteer chair Jacqueline Hays, but the nonprofit folded last year under the weight of financial difficulties, as previously reported by The Examiner on March 9.

But now a new event, Equality Fest has grown out of the movement, which included a march and street fair this past weekend.

June 14 at about 4 p.m., deputies with the JCSO Traffic Unit conducted a traffic stop on I-10 near Smith Road. The vehicle was being driven by 38-year-old Benina Villarreal of Rio Grande City, Texas. She had her 18-year-old daughter and her 9-year-old son as passengers.

The Ben J. Rogers Regional Visitors Center, a Jefferson County Department, will celebrate 10 years of welcoming the world to Southeast Texas on Wednesday, June 21.

An after-hours event is being planned with food, drinks, and entertainment at the Visitors Center, located at 5055 I-10 South in Beaumont.

A 23-year-old Eagle Pass, Texas man has been sentenced to federal prison for violations in the Eastern District of Texas, Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston announced June 14.

Lamar University will be hosting the CO2 Recovery and Storage Conference for the first time ever Monday, June 19 – Wednesday, June 21. The first two days will feature the 2nd International Workshop on Offshore Geologic CO2 Storage. The third day will feature a Carbon Safe Workshop.

“We have about 25-30 scientists from across Europe attending and presenting their ideas,” said Paul Latiolais, director of Lamar University’s Center for Innovation, Commercialization and Entrepreneurship (CICE), where the conference is being held.

More than one veteran police officer was released from duty at the Port Arthur Police Department within a week’s time. Mickey Sterling and Rickey Antoine were terminated from employment on consecutive Fridays amid allegations of impropriety. Both had been on administrative leave pending a final decision to terminate or to return them to work by PAPD Chief Patrick Melvin. 

Officer Darren Johnson, placed on administrative leave at the same time as Antoine, resigned.

Orange County has been introducing children to first responders through the annual Cops N Kids picnic for more than 20 years, with each event drawing in a large crowd. About 2,700 people attended the picnic last year, and thousands were again present at Claiborne Park for the 2017 picnic.

Matt Schneider is a flight paramedic with Air Evac and rides in the air rescue helicopter regularly. It’s his job to provide medical care for patients in critical need. When those patients are children, the job can be even tougher.

Beaumont shop owner Derek Poe carries a rifle into Parkdale Mall.

After a 9th Court of Appeals decision not to intervene on behalf of former Beaumont shop owner Derek Poe, it was up to a Jefferson County jury to decide whether Poe’s December 2013 walk through the mall where his shop was located with an assault rifle strapped to his back was indeed a crime punishable under the law. This month, the six-person jury recorded its verdict.

Beaumont’s Police Chief Jimmy Singletary swore four more officers into the department’s ranks during a ceremony at the downtown station June 9.

Assistant Chief Jim Clay opened the ceremony, thanking council members Virginia Jordan, Robin Mouton and Gethrel “Get” Williams-Wright for attending the swearing-in event and showing support for the new officers and their families.
