"Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries" - Beaumont Fire Department staff remind the community that as you "spring forward" and set your clocks ahead an hour during daylight saving time (DST), it is also a good opportunity to change out your batteries in your smoke detectors.

Smoke detectors save lives, so BFD encourages you to change the batteries and to test your detectors regularly. Have an escape plan, and get your children involved so they will know what to do in an emergency.

Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a house fire in the 5700 block of Glasgow Lane in Beaumont on Friday evening, March 7, that investigators believe was caused by an electrical short.

According to a news release from the Beaumont Fire Department, firefighters arrived at the residence at shortly after 10 p.m.and found a wall of the kitchen at the home ablaze. Firefighters extinguished the flames, which appeared to investigators to have been confined to the single wall of the kitchen.

The associated media campaign will kick off this week and run through the end of March.

Police in Vidor have arrested another suspect for methamphetamine possession after a rash of arrests in the previous week related to the dangerous narcotic.

Texas Education Agency representatives reported the results of a financial investigation into the Beaumont Independent School District to Superintendent Timothy Chargois on Friday, March 7, according to TEA spokesperson DeEtta Culbertson. BISD officials will have 10 business days to respond to the TEA's findings.

Some criminals never learn, and two suspects in Orange County seem to be unable to take a lesson from prior mistakes. Orange County deputies have arrested two men for methamphetamine possession in Orangefield, one of whom was arrested for the same charge less than a month ago and another who faces multiple felony charges posed in three separate indictments, OCSO Chief Deputy Clint Hodkinson reports.

Southeast Texas Citizen Bee contestants

Kelly High School seniors Lauren Powers and Thomas Cobb participated in the Southeast Texas Citizen Bee at Lamar State College-Port Arthur Thursday evening, March 6. Powers was awarded Honorable Mention and Cobb won first place!  Cobb will represent Region 5 at the State Citizen Bee Contest in Austin on April 26.  Congratulations to them both!
