New Beaumont fire chief Earl White addressed City Council.

The city of Beaumont selected retired firefighter and Pct. 1 Constable Earl White as its new fire chief during a City Council meeting April 24. White was selected as the top choice out of more than 80 applicants.

White retired from Beaumont Fire-Rescue after 35 years of service to the community as a firefighter and arson investigator, and he then continued to serve Southeast Texas in another capacity. White took the oath of office as the Pct. 1 constable in March 2016 shortly after his win in the Democratic primary.

Citizens took a stand, and city and county officials took heed of constituents’ opposition when the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) announced plans to eliminate the Brooks Road overpass as part of ongoing widening projects on Interstate 10.

Fines, forfeitures, pesky court dates for misdemeanor crimes and municipal tickets, permitting processes and police raids … all have failed to deter casino-style game room gambling sites from popping up all over Beaumont. But the fight is far from over, according to those tasked with upholding law and order, evidenced by a recent felony indictment for what typically carries misdemeanor charges.

34-year-old Western lowland gorilla Zuri

The Houston Zoo is mourning the loss of 34-year-old Western lowland gorilla, Zuri. The elderly gorilla was under treatment for severe gastrointestinal disease for the past few months, and after a full assessment of his quality of life, and the worsening of his disease despite treatment, the gorilla team and the veterinarians made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize the nearly 400-pound ape, the zoo announced April 21.

Before 7 a.m. Thursday morning, April 26, Beaumont police and emergency first responders were called to the Starbucks on Dowlen Road in Beaumont to investigate a suspicious package located at the coffee shop.
According to a report from the scene, a Starbucks employee found a letter reading “die USA” upon opening an unattended package left at the store earlier in the week. The package, which was sealed “Priority Mail” and left unopened inside the coffee shop for almost two days, reportedly contained other unidentified material as well.

Beaumont Police responded to an attempted kidnapping of three children near the 2200 block of West Virginia Monday, April 23.

April 19, 2018 at approximately 2:30 a.m. the Jefferson County Narcotics Task Force was conducting a surveillance on a subject who was selling narcotics. The vehicle was a white Chrysler 300 occupied by a white male identified as Tyler Blaine Womack and a white female passenger identified as Nalah Felish Castillo.

April 13, 2018, at approximately 2 a.m., Galveston County deputies responded to the area of 15th and Avenue D in Bacliff to a report of a suspicious vehicle said to be halfway in the roadway and halfway in the ditch.  As deputies made contact with the driver, signs of intoxication were observed and the driver then fled from the scene in the vehicle.
