An auto-pedestrian accident claimed the life of an elderly woman in Orange over the weekend. According to a police report, 86-year-old Faye Williams Bounds of Orange was struck and killed Jan. 26 at approximately 4:30 p.m. in the 3100 block of F.M. 3247 while crossing the road after retrieving her mail.

A second suspected case of arson over the last week has left a Beaumont family without a home and has fire investigators looking for suspects.

Beaumont Fire Rescue units responded to a structure fire at 3755 Treadway. When firefighters arrived, they found the home heavily involved with fire. The family was not at home at the time of the fire and there were no injuries. The fire caused extensive damage to the home.

After the 2:30 p.m. National Weather Service call Tuesday, Jan. 28, Jefferson County made the decision to reopen all its offices at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29. If conditions do not improve enough Wednesday morning for roads to properly clear, then that 1 p.m. opening could change, the Jefferson County Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security said in a press release.

Port Arthur Police are investigating two incidents from the evening of Sunday, Jan. 26, that they believe are related. While responding to the first call regarding shots fired in the 300 block of 9th Street at approximately 10:13 p.m., PAPD received a second call about a shooting victim in the 900 block of 10th Street.

UPDATE: The Purple Heart Memorial Bridge over the Neches River in Beaumont was open as of 1:15 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, according to a Beaumont Emergency Management Department press release. The city hopes the bridge will stay passable; however, highways in Beaumont are becoming heavily iced.

In a short ceremony in the presence of family and friends, Cory Crenshaw was sworn in as Jefferson County's newest district attorney after the office was vacated late last year. 

The news came Monday afternoon, Jan. 27, 2014, and soon thereafter, Crenshaw was sworn in, with the oath of office administered by Criminal District Court Judge John Stevens. 

Crenshaw was an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Texas under John M. Bales before being appointed as Jefferson County's interim district attorney.

A 50-year-old Cameron, Louisiana man has been sentenced to federal prison for bank robbery in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney John M. Bales on Jan. 27.

Allen Keith Miller pleaded guilty on August 28, 2013, to bank robbery and was sentenced to 57 months in federal prison on January 24, 2014, by U.S. District Judge Marcia Crone.

Investigators with the Beaumont Fire Department suspect arson as the cause of a fire that caused extensive damage to the garage of a home in the 2300 block of Gladys Street in Beaumont during the evening of Saturday, Jan. 25.
