The March of Dimes annual March for Babies walk is happening this Saturday, April 21, and the folks at the Southeast Texas chapter of the March of Dimes are preparing for one of their best walks yet. They have more than 150 teams signed up for this year’s event, and they hope to surpass the amount of money raised last year, organizers said. Last year more than 1,000 people participated in the walk, and organizers are expecting another great turnout with more people walking this year.

FROM THE BEAUMONT POLICE DEPARTMENT - On Wednesday, March 14, Samantha Jackson was shot and run over by her father in the Jefferson County Courthouse Parking Lot. Minnie Ray Sebolt was killed during the shooting and two others were shot but were treated and released.

Jackson was critically injured but has continued to fight to stay alive and recover.

“We have 10 days, not including off days,” a curt voice from inside the Orangefield ISD administrative offices informed a reporter on the ninth day of waiting for records to be released after filing an open records request with the district.

Jim Mercer of The Mercer Group, the search firm hired by the city of Port Arthur to find its next city manager to replace Steve Fitzgibbons, relayed to The Examiner last week that he had identified five candidates for the position. One of those candidates was identified and verified last week as current assistant city manager Becky Underhill, who has been with the city in some capacity for the past 20 years, including eight in her current role.
