As previously reported in the pages of this newspaper, a scam targeting seniors and persons receiving disability benefits made its way through Jefferson County in the past few months, with residents of Port Arthur impacted at a significant rate. Those perpetrating the scam duped victims by promising them access to a federal stimulus check, allegedly available to all Social Security recipients, even though no such provision exists. Victims supplied the scammers with copies of their driver’s license, Social Security number, and banking information.

UPDATES: Instructor Cequana Clark informed The Examiner on Thursday evening, Sept. 13, that she has been asked to turn in her keys and receipt book, terminating her employment with BISD. Clark anticipated losing half her paycheck with the cancelation of the adult cosmetology program, but she was still employed as a night-class instructor for the Taylor Center.

Beaumont Independent School District Chief Financial Officer Robert Zingelmann announced Sept. 11 that he will be leaving the school district to accept a position as the new Region 4 Chief Financial Officer, serving an estimated 51 school districts and one million students. Eric McGowen, wanted for fleeing from his trial in Liberty County on charges of sexually assaulting an 11-year-old girl, has been arrested by a team of law enforcement officers led by the U.S. Marshals in Houston, according to a press release from the agency.

Lumberton is getting a state-of-the-art emergency room with a touch of small-town care.

According to an Altus press release, the company will break ground Sept. 25 and begin building the 10,000 square-foot complex, which will include a trauma room, eight treatment rooms, lab services, a triage unit, radiology suite, pharmacy and year-round emergency room services.

With heavy hearts, much of Beaumont’s fire, EMS and police community gathered Sept. 11, 2012, to commemorate those first responders who lost their lives in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
