Recent incidents police believe are related to the use of the drug phencyclidine, or PCP, have resulted in multiple arrests in Orange over the span of a week, with suspects accused of public intoxication and possession of a controlled substance. But an incident in Beaumont months ago that police say could be PCP-related resulted in the death of a man and his daughter.

Two duck hunters stuck in the marsh near Adams Bayou and the Inter-Coastal Waterway in Orange were rescued by Sheriff Keith Merritt after calling the Orange County Sheriff's Office for help on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at about 7:40 a.m.

According to a news release from OCSO, the hunters were attempting to navigate a duck blind when the boat became stuck in the icy muck. The two men reportedly tired to free the boat for several hours but were unsuccessful.

Indictments are in for two Beaumont Independent School District employees charged with embezzling millions from the district. The U.S. Attorney's Office will hold a press conference announcing the new development at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 8, but The Examiner has obtained a copy of the filed indictments available at the theexaminer.com.

Monday, Jan. 6, at about 7:50 p.m., Beaumont Police Department patrol officers responded to a reported shooting victim in the 5600 block of Lancaster. Officers arrived and found  20-year-old Emanuel Burleigh of Beaumont with an apparent gunshot wound to his  upper body. Paramedics on scene said the man was dead.

Jefferson County Tax Assessor-Collector Shane Howard announced his resignation, effective Feb. 3, on Friday, Jan. 3.

Howard is resigning and moving to the private sector to become manager and partner of an electrical contracting company based out of Beaumont that is expanding into the Permian Basin area of West Texas, he said.
