Beaumont Independent School District administrator Kirvis Fontenot was indicted by a Jefferson County grand jury on Wednesday, Jan. 27, for allegedly misappropriating funds entrusted to him as the assistant principal at BISD’s Pathways alternative school campus.

A rehearing has been denied in the case of former Jefferson County employee Donna Davis. The Supreme Court of Texas rejected the county’s request Friday, Jan. 22. 

A Jefferson County jury found in Davis’ favor in March 2014, awarding the ousted employee in excess of $1 million in damages for wrongful termination and age discrimination. The case was filed in Jefferson County in 2008.

National School Choice Week will be showcased in a rally Thursday, Jan. 28, at 4 p.m. in downtown Beaumont, on the lawn between the public library and the Julie Rogers Theater.

Local alternative schools, including several private schools and public charter schools will be participating and are inviting parents, students, teachers and other interested persons to a rally in support of school choice. The rally is completely non-partisan and non-political in nature, according to event organizers.

A steep discount on a monthly cable bill sound great, but it could be the set up for a scam. Con artists are impersonating cable companies and taking advantage of eagerness to save.

How the Scam Works: You get a call, and it’s someone claiming to be a representative from your cable provider’s loyal rewards program. The caller offers you a significant discount on your monthly cable and/or service. For $80 per month, you can get phone, broadband Internet, and the premium cable channels. This package would typically run subscribers well over $100/month.

Fire and smoke billowing over downtown Beaumont’s dreary dark afternoon sky about 3 p.m. Thursday afternoon, Jan. 21, caused citizen alarm and Lamar University to suspend classes. The emissions were generated from the ExxonMobil Beaumont Complex, according to company Public and Government Affairs Manager Lee Dula.

A fake cop’s case in Beaumont has led to the indictment and arrest of a real law enforcement officer as the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has charged Liberty County Precinct 6 Constable John Joslin with perjury in covering up the crimes of accused cop impersonator Michael Gelagotis by lying in sworn statements to investigators.

Joslin was arrested in Liberty County and, while still in his constable uniform, was brought to the Jefferson County Courthouse to answer the allegations in front of Judge Larry Gist on Monday, Jan. 25.

Joseph Leday, a longtime employee of the city of Port Arthur, was apprehended Friday, Jan. 22, in an operation that took four off the city’s streets for allegedly conspiring on what federal agents termed “multi-ounce” methamphetamines sales over the last year, the last transaction as recent as Jan. 20. Two were charged with federal crimes while two others were taken into state custody.

More than a year after a forensic audit was first suggested to examine the hiring practices and financial management of the city of Port Arthur, a team commissioned to do the job has been given its marching orders, according to former city councilman and audit supporter Stephen Mosely.

As the result of an ongoing corruption investigation in Port Arthur, four suspects were charged with felony theft Jan. 25 stemming from allegations they were involved in a gas-theft conspiracy. Those arrested include two former Port Arthur Public Works Department supervisors and two Port Arthur business owners, reports the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

The Beaumont Foundation of America recently awared $75,000 to the Southeast Texas Food Bank to help strengthen its mission of feeding the hungry in Southeast Texas. The funds were specifically awarded to help improve access to nutritious food for low-income residents in underserved communities in the eight counties within the food bank’s service territory.
