Attorney General Ken Paxton announced on March 7 that his office reached a final settlement with the three operators of a tech support scam who tricked consumers into buying expensive and unnecessary computer repairs. The settlement is in conjunction with a nationwide sweep that Attorney General Paxton’s office helped lead, targeting fraudsters who engaged in tech support scams and other elder fraud cases.

Officers with the Port Arthur Police Department responded to the Cedar Ridge Apartments on Ninth Avenue in reference to a shooting at about 10:30 p.m. on March 11. 

Upon their arrival, officers located a 19-year-old Port Arthur man with a gunshot wound to his lower abdomen. The victim was unable to speak or respond to the arriving officers. He was transported to St. Elizabeth's for emergency medical treatment but ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.

The Hardin County Sheriff's Office reported two are injured, including a 4-year-old child, following an incident involving two Hardin County deputies.

According to information from HCSO, deputies were responding to a domestic disturbance at a home just west of Sour Lake off Highway 105 at about 10 a.m. Sunday, March 10. Upon their arrival, a suspect, who had been barred from the home via a court protective order, fled from the law enforcement officerrs and attempted to run over one of the responding deputies in the yard of the residence.

Friday, March 8, administration at the Beaumont Independent School District received information regarding a possible threat towards West Brook High School, spokesperson Nakisha Burns reported. The threat, according to Burns, was posted on social media.  

“The administration immediately responded and contacted the BISD police department,” Burns advised. “The student was not on campus but is currently in police custody.  

“We want to assure parents that safety protocols were promptly followed to ensure student safety.”

Port Arthur Police Department officers have made an arrest in a Feb. 24 homicide on Birch Avenue. 

According to information from PAPD, officers were called to a residence in the 2100 block of Birch at about midnight on Feb. 24, where they found an unresponsive female resident. Autopsy results showed she had died as a result of blunt force trauma.

Through their investigation, it was determined Daniel Shackelford, 34, was allegedly responsible for the victim's death. PAPD reports Shackelford and the victim were in a relationship at the time of her death.

A 39-year-old Vidor man with a history of crimes against the state has now been indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas, announced U.S. Attorney Joseph D. Brown March 7.

Brandon Aaron Holeman was named in a three-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury on March 6, charging him with two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm and one count of possession of an unregistered firearm.

Orange police officers responded to a wreck involving a Waste Management sanitation truck and a Ford F-150 on Tuesday, March 5, at about 7:15 a.m. 

Information from the Orange Police Department states, the collision between the 2017 Freightliner garbage truck and 2018 F-150 took place on Old Highway 90 and resulted in one sanitaiton worker being injured. 

The Waste Management truck was crewed by three people at the time of the wreck - one 42-year-old female driver and two men, ages 30 and 40, working at the rear of the vehicle.

A Newton County deputy directing traffic by a structure fire on Highway 12 in Deweyville was struck in a hit-and-run incident on Friday, March 1, at about 9 p.m.

According to information from Newton County Sheriff's Office, the driver left the scene and headed south on Highway 87. A second deputy attempted to pursue the vehicle but lost sight of it as they entered Orange County. Law enforcement, with the help of witnesses located the abandoned truck at a home near Abes Road.
