Community mourns teens killed over the weekend

Department of Public Safety troopers were on the scene of a vehicle collision that claimed the lives of three Orange County teens in the early morning of Sunday, Sept. 18.

According to information from the investigating agency, there was a two-vehicle crash on Highway 62 shortly after 3:30 a.m. involving a 2008 Mazda 4-door driven by 17-year-old Grey C. Smith and a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 30-year-old Clinton Lloyd. Two passengers were with Smith, and one with Lloyd.

Five arrested for engaging in organized criminal activity

Five men were arrested over the weekend for engaging in organized criminal activity at a home, after a dispute that started at Central High School. Just after midnight Saturday, Sept. 17, Beaumont police reports say a vehicle pulled up to a residence on Buffalo Avenue and three passengers got out of the vehicle and approached the home, asking two people sitting on the porch where a resident was. When the men didn't get a response, one of the suspects believed to be 37-year-old Gregory Robinson pulled out a pistol and shot once, hitting the house.

Man shot in head in critical condition

Shortly after midnight Friday, Sept. 16, Beaumont police officers were called out to an address on Forrest Street in Beaumont.

When they arrived, they found a Hispanic man lying in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the back of his head. He was transported to the hospital where he was reported in critical condition.

Detectives are investigating and The Examiner will report more information as it becomes available.

Orange responders battle Wednesday bedroom fire

The City of Orange Fire Department responded to a report of a bedroom on fire at 604 Morrell in the Navy Park addition Wednesday, Sept. 14, around 10:20 p.m.

Woman sentenced to 20 years for intoxication manslaughter

After spending three days in trial, Tanjia Colleen Smith pleaded guilty to charges of intoxication manslaughter stemming from a July 2010 accident that claimed the life of 55-year-old Dudley Butaud.

Butaud was on his way home to celebrate his 30th anniversary with his wife Kathy when the accident occurred on Highway 365.

The agenda for Thursday's Beaumont Independent School District Board of Trustees regular meeting is listed inside and the attachments, which a majority of trustees voted to keep secret from the public, have been provided. The Examiner obtained copies of the attachments that BISD officials wanted to keep from the public and has placed them above the meeting agenda.

Man arrested for stealing wire from burned building

On Sunday, Sept. 11, Beaumont police officers were dispatched to 2290 Eastex Freeway, the Golden Triangle Directory building, at about 8:30 a.m. in reference to a theft in progress. Just over a week ago, the facility was destroyed by a fire and was left unusable.

Ten years ago today, the United States was under attack, carving an indelible moment in time that introduced everyone to a new phenomenon – the Post 9/11 World.

Not since Pearl Harbor nearly 70 years prior to Sept. 11, 2001, had Americans felt so vulnerable on its own soil and so uncertain as to what the future held for the most powerful country in the world.

BISD posts private student info online

The Beaumont Independent School District is being very hush-hush after a West Brook student discovered hundreds and possibly thousands of classmates were put at risk of identity theft because the district posted a computer file to the Internet that contained test score information, Social Security numbers and other data, The Examiner has found.

And according to a parent who has detailed information on the findings, the information could have been in the public domain for at least two years without anyone at the administration building knowing.

Remembering 9/11

As train horns blared in the background of a cool late morning, nearly 100 spectators and participants gathered in front of the Jefferson County Courthouse to remember the lives lost during the terroristic bombing attacks launched on America’s cities and citizens Sept. 11, 2001.

The remembrance ceremony started promptly at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 9, with opening remarks performed by Constable Charles Wiggins, and an opening prayer offered by the Rev. Mark Adams of Beaumont’s First Baptist Church.
