The Beaumont Foundation of America is pleased to announce the 15 recipients of the 2017 Reaud Excellence in Education Award. Since 2009 the Foundation has recognized superior teachers whose dedication and leadership inspire both students and fellow educators. The awards provide public acclaim and financial rewards to these teachers who are furthering excellence in education throughout Southeast Texas.

Two teams of mechanical engineering students from Lamar University are heading for Detroit this April to compete in fuel efficiency contests at the annual Shell Eco-marathon Americas. The Carbon Cardinals will display their skills in the Prototype competition, and the Eco-Cardinals will show off their engineering know-how in the Urban Concept race.

Footage of Demarcus Brown being forcibly taken into police custody at a Beaumont Wal-Mart in April of 2016 made the habitual criminal quasi famous as an alleged victim of overzealous law enforcement. What the footage doesn’t show, however, is how often Brown is taken into custody.

Out on bond for the Wal-Mart theft charge and probation violation, Brown again found himself in handcuffs at the Beaumont Police Department on Wednesday, March 15, facing yet another theft charge.

Returning to civilian life can be a struggle for some military veterans, particularly combat veterans and the growing number of veterans diagnosed with disorders such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury. For veterans battling personal demons that often stem from their wartime service, battling the legal system is the last thing they need, according to Veterans Treatment Court advocates.

Mid County’s Victory Garden may have started last year, but the retro name harkens back to the World War II homefront. 

Desiree McPhillips, the organizer, said this was intentional. “We liked the imagery of the old wartime garden photos,” she explained.

The Mid County Victory Garden is located on Nederland Avenue, just behind the Sheer Madness hair salon. Sheer Madness is McPhillips’s hair salon, which is the only salon in Southeast Texas that offers organic hair dye, she said.

A 34-year-old federal prison guard has pleaded guilty to bribery in the Eastern District of Texas, announced Acting U.S. Attorney Brit Featherston March 15.Anqunett Vernetta Lewis, of Houston, pleaded guilty to information charging her with bribery of a public official before U.S. Magistrate Judge Zack Hawthorn, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney's Office spokesperson Davilyn Walston.

Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies arrested a Beaumont man March 13 who is a suspect in multiple burglaries, and recovered 15 grams of methamphetamine during the subsequent investigation, reports Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Captain Crystal Holmes.

According to a news release from Holmes, at about 2:30 p.m., deputies stopped a black Mitsubishi matching the description of a vehicle involved in several Beaumont burglaries highlighted on Crimestoppers.
