Police in Port Arthur are investigating a shooting that left one man dead at the Baymont Inn & Suites on Highway 73 Dec. 29, reports the Port Arthur Police Department. 

Police responded to a report of shots fired at the hotel shortly after 9 p.m. Responding units discovered a 29-year-old Port Arthur resident deceased at the scene and suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.

Two recent accidental shootings in Port Arthur suggest some residents don’t how to safely handle weapons, and the number of new gun owners grows all the time. This year alone, the FBI recorded 185,713 background checks through the National Instant Criminal Background system for Black Friday purchases in the U.S., 400 more than 2015, Business Insider reported Nov. 28.

Although they’re often given as presents, firearms are not toys. Mishandled, they can lead to injuries that range from embarrassing to life threatening.

Shouts from volunteers at Some Other Place, who were handing out gifts to local family’s during the charity’s Christmas Giving Program Dec. 22, rang out as Officer Todd Jackson of the Beaumont Police Department walked through the door of the nonprofit’s storage warehouse after he found and returned 13 bicycles that had been stolen from the facility overnight.

As 2016 comes to a close, Jefferson County has yet to ink a deal with a new management firm to oversee the Ford Park Entertainment Complex. After months of negotiation, a contract to secure the services of a management firm for the publicly subsidized entertainment complex is held up as lawyers review the proposition on the table, according to county purchasing agent Deborah Clark.

Under the tenure of SMG, Ford Park has run at a nearly $2 million annual deficit – a deficit charged to taxpayers of Jefferson County.
