Following major wildfires in the Texas Panhandle, Governor Greg Abbott declared a state of disaster on March 13 in the following counties: Gray, Hemphill, Lipscomb, Ochiltree, Roberts and Wheeler, according to a statement.

In addition to the disaster declaration, the State of Texas has asked the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for a Secretarial Disaster Designation to activate the USDA Farm Service Agency's Emergency Loan Program to help eligible farmers and ranchers rebuild and recover from losses sustained by the wildfires.

On Saturday, March 11, at 11:22 p.m. Beaumont Police officers were working an accident in the 7900 block of Walden Road. A marked Beaumont Police patrol unit was parked unoccupied when a white ford F-150 failed to control speed and collided with the unit, Officer Cody Guedry reported March 12.

A free Hebrew class meets every Tuesday night at 6 p.m. in the community room at the R.C. Miller Memorial Library in Beaumont. New students can join at any time.

The class, which has 10 to 12 regular students, is taught by Lamar chemical engineering professor Rafi Tadmor and Arlene Pippin, former volunteer at the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem.

Beginners learn days of the week, numbers, colors and parts of the body and practice writing the Hebrew alphabet on their first day.

“It’s more like a study group,” Pippin said.
