La’Tisha Vargas, an event planner with the folkloric ballet troupe the Golden Triangle Hispanic Association, invites the community to attend a celebration of Mexican Independence Day, which is Sept. 16. Vargas’ dancers, various bands, numerous vendors and others will be on Crockett Street in Beaumont on Sunday, Sept. 15, from 1 p.m. on for a pageant and festival to commemorate the occasion.

Mexican Heritage Fiesta

Grupo Flash will return to the 45th Mexican Heritage Society Fiesta in Port Arthur. The cumbia and salsa band was so popular this past year that the 2013 fiesta has added an extra hour for the party to continue, promoters for the event said.

Orange County commissioners argued salaries of elected officials at a meeting Monday, Sept. 9. Among hotly debated items from the meeting were the sheriff’s pay rate and position on the Matrix system used by Orange County for salary calculation, and the removal of a $15,000 supplement from the county to district judges’ salaries.
