Last summer, violence rocked the city of Beaumont, and law enforcement agencies joined forces with pastors and other community leaders to combat criminal activity. They asked the community to take up that mantle, too, and the citizenry paid heed. Since then, reports the Beaumont Police Department, several violent criminals have been arrested and indicted based on tips and information provided by cooperating witnesses.

At a press conference Feb. 15, BPD Officer Haley Morrow recalled last year’s events and provided updates on some high-profile cases.

The City Council voted Feb. 20 to raise garbage bills for Beaumont residents in order to offset the cost for trash pickup the city is taking over from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT).

"Get Wright" was more than a name or a campaign slogan — it was mayor pro-tem and longtime At-large City Councilwoman Gethrel “Get” Williams-Wright’s message to her community and its leaders – do what’s right and what’s best for Beaumont.

And for so many years, she did just that, but Sunday, Feb. 18, 2018, it was announced that the longtime public servant had died overnight at Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth. She was 78.

Parents were notified Wednesday night, Feb. 21, that Beaumont Independent School District campuses would be participating in safety training on Thursday, Feb. 22, and Friday, Feb. 23.

“Please be advised that the district is conducting lockdown intruder drills on all secondary campuses on tomorrow and Friday,” BISD spokesperson Nakisha Burns advised. “The drills will be under the direction of the Beaumont ISD Police Department.”
