A suspicious package was allegedly reported in the area of HEB grocery and Bay Bright car wash on Dowlen Road in Beaumont the morning of Tuesday, May 22, according to employees of nearby businesses. Traffic was being diverted in the area, with limited access to properties and stores.

Additional information from police at the scene detailed the scenario as first responders and bomb squad officers arrived to find an unattended box left in the median of the roadway between Alter’s Gem Jewelers and Delaware Street.

Criminal District Attorney Bob Wortham announced May 21 that Christopher Bushnell, 28, and Rashanda Morris, 27, each entered pleas of guilty to first degree Injury to a Child. Bushnell was charged with intentionally or knowingly causing serious bodily injury to the victim, a two-year-old child, by holding her feet under hot water. Morris was charged with intentionally or knowingly, by omission, causing serious bodily injury to the victim by failing to seek medical treatment after Bushnell injured the child.

Wednesday, May 16, at 10:40 a.m., Jefferson County Sheriff’s Deputy Brigitte Hazleton stopped a speeder on I-10 for multiple violations. When she approached the car, she smelled the odor of marijuana. The two occupants admitted that they had just smoked weed prior to the stop.

A search of the vehicle yielded an AK-47 with a loaded 30 round magazine of 7.62x39mm ammunition. The driver, 22-year-old Daterrius Alexander of Houston, was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon. He has a previous felony conviction out of Bell County.

With assistance from Walmart loss prevention staff and two good Samaritans, a Vidor police officer sidetracked a robbery suspect fleeing the superstore following an alleged theft, but not before he sustained some sensitive injuries during a short foot chase.

Deputies with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office arrested two suspects after responding to a report from a contractor who saw suspicious activity while working at a Northwest Forest residence in the county, just off Tram Road.

Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at 3:30 p.m., Jefferson County Narcotics Task Force Investigators were conducting narcotics surveillance when they stopped a black Chevrolet truck near the area of Jimmy Johnson and Ninth Avenue in Port Arthur. The K-9 Narcotics Dog from Port Neches PD assisted on the traffic stop. After a positive alert to drugs, a search of the vehicle was conducted and drugs were found. Two male subjects, 37-year-old Chad Dubois of Port Arthur and 35-year-old Carlos Valerio of Beaumont, were arrested.
