An unattended pot on a stovetop of a local apartment is believed to be responsible for a fire at the residence on May 8, Beaumont Fire-Rescue reports.

According to a news release from Beaumont Fire-Rescue, at approximately 11:34 a.m., units responded to a reported structure fire in the 4900 block of Highland Avenue. When firefighters arrived, they found an apartment building with heavy smoke coming from one apartment. Firefighters were able to make a quick attack and confine the fire to the kitchen of the single apartment.

The Gulf of Mexico commercial shrimp season for both Texas and federal waters will close 30 minutes after sunset May 15 until a still-to-be determined time in July.

The closing date is based on samples collected by the Coastal Fisheries Division of the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department using trawl, bag seine and other information gathered from the shrimping industry.

Motorists crossing the channel between Bolivar Peninsula and Galveston Island were impeded by a shutdown of ferry service for approximately three hours Monday morning, May 4, after a man reportedly jumped from a ferry.

According to information from the Coast Guard, the jumper was a white male between 40 and 50 years old. Ferry personnel immediately initiated rescue attempts when the man jumped overboard, but were unsuccessful in locating the man overboard.

Over 1,500 students were able to witness the tragic consequences of drinking and driving on Tuesday, April 28, when Memorial High School in Port Arthur hosted a presentation from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office’s Shattered Dreams Program. The annual car-crash demonstration is meant to outline the dangers of drinking and driving, especially for teens.

Police have identified and are currently searching for a second suspect in the capital murder of Mettha (Metthananda) Kuruppu, the convenience store clerk who was shot and killed while working at the Pick N Shop located at 870 S. Major Dr. in Beaumont on April 29, reported the Beaumont Police Department on May 7.
