Vicki Stark-Fitts, 49, of Hull pleaded guilty Aug. 22 to racketeering charges related to her association with a “whites only” criminal enterprise that engaged in methamphetamine distribution and murder in the Eastern District of Texas, U.S. Attorney John M. Bales announced Aug. 22.

With the City of Beaumont gearing up for its multi-million-dollar Seventh Street project, some homeowners in the area aren’t happy the city has cut down some of the oldest trees in Old Town. 

“This one is 100 years or more,” said one Old Town resident who asked to be identified only as “Judy.”

Jerry Craven, head of the Lamar University Press, recently received the Frank O. Connor Award for fiction for his short story “The Stone Salvation Barn.” Craven was chosen by descant, the literary journal of Texas Christian University, in which the story will be published, Lamar University said in a press release. More than 100 stories were considered for this prestigious award.

Police have arrested two men who they say robbed a small grocer Monday evening, Aug. 26. 

According to a BPD press release, officers responded to Mike's Drive-In at 680 Buford about 4:11 p.m. Monday night to find the clerk who told police he had just been robbed at gunpoint.

Police arrested and charged a 17-year-old Orange resident with murder Tuesday night, Aug. 27, after witnesses say he shot a man who was pulled from a burning car the night before.

A Lumberton man was shot and killed Saturday, Aug. 24, following what Hardin County Sheriff's Office is calling a dispute with a Coleman Road homeowner over property that he was given permission to hunt on. The area, located near the Neches River, is secluded and usually accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles and ATVs, the sheriff's office said in a press release.

A pastor in Orange reported he was the victim of a weekend theft at his church, Full Gospel Holy Temple in the 1400 block of Ninth Street, just after 7 a.m. Saturday morning. Police say the burglary occurred sometime overnight from Friday evening to Saturday morning.
