Strike averted

The negotiations went down to the wire on Jan. 31 as the United Steelworkers union and Royal Dutch Shell reached a tentative agreement on a new three-year contract averting a possible strike that could have idled as many as 69 refineries in the United States, including many of the petrochemical facilities in Southeast Texas.

March of Dimes gearing up for yearly event

Southeast Texas has always been a charitable area when called upon to donate for local causes, even in this economy that has ravaged charitable giving.

For Donna Blanchette and the March of Dimes program, they’re counting on the generosity of the area once again as they ramp up fundraising for this year’s March of Dimes 2012 March for Babies. This year’s event is a three-mile walk that will take place on the Lamar campus beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, April 21. Last year more than 1,000 people participated.

Shhh! It’s a secret - City Attorney hides Kendrick Perkins deal

It was supposed to be a secret. In what some might call a wink-and-nod agreement, Beaumont City Attorney Tyrone Cooper’s office dismissed misdemeanor criminal charges against NBA star Kendrick Perkins for disorderly conduct and public intoxication and took no position when Perkins filed to have his criminal record expunged – a move that would erase any trace of his conduct and actions toward the Beaumont Police Department inside and outside The Ticket Sports Bar on Aug. 13, 2011.

Breaking News: Union vote set for Tuesday in Beaumont

The Examiner has confirmed through multiple sources that the USW has recommended approval of an agreement with Shell Oil on contract negotiations. Although there was a national agreement, each local union must ratify the agreement.

Senseless act kills father of three

It was going to be a fantastic weekend. Gary and Lisa Naquin, married since 2001, together since 1997, had a surprise in store last Friday, Jan. 27, for their two boys, 11-year-old Tylor and 5-year-old Caden. Both had received straight A’s on their report cards the week prior, and Gary wanted to do something special for them.

When a halfway house asked for permission to locate up to 20 more sex offenders in Beaumont’s north end, community activists felt the need to speak out. The Old Town residential neighborhood already had more than its fair share of blight to contend with, opponents told elected city leaders and zoning commissioners — not to mention nearly 200 other sex offenders already housed a short stroll from schools, HUD-funded apartment complexes, a park, city swimming pool, football stadium and the school district’s bus depot.

Abbott v. Holder

Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice on Jan. 23 to compel enforcement of the state’s new voter ID law approved by the Legislature last year, which requires voters to show government-issued photo identification before voting.
