Askren visits Beaumont, bringing MMA world title

Ben Askren successfully defended, and dominated, in his latest title defense, which I attended on April 6. He beat up on Douglas Lima, one of the top welterweights in the world, for five rounds at Bellator 64 at Caesars in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Askren (10-0) is in town for a MMA clinic at West Brook Gymnasium, 8750 Phelan Blvd. in Beaumont, on April 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.

The clinic is open to the public and cost is $40 per person. Tickets can be purchased at America Top Team-Beaumont (7310 Highway 105) or Texas Punishment Crew (6376 Phelan Blvd), both in Beaumont, or $50 at the door.

Nicknamed “Funky,” the 27-year-old Askren is a world-class wrestler who is a two-time NCAA Division I national wrestling champion at the University of Missouri. He became only the second person to win the Dan Hodge Trophy twice, which is equivalent to the Heisman in college football. He also qualified and competed for Team USA in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.

Crawfish fundraiser

American Top Team-Beaumont/Texas Karate Academy will host a crawfish fundraiser on Sunday, April 15, beginning at noon at Major League Grill, 4430 Dowlen Road in Beaumont.

For $18, you’ll get 2 1/2 pounds of crawfish, corn and potatoes, and you can dine in or take it with you. Proceeds will benefit ATT-Beaumont/TKA and Buckner Children and Family Services in Beaumont.
