Chad Cooper's picks for Louisiana Derby Day - Saturday, March 28

Trainer Tom Amoss and War Story

Fair Grounds - Louisiana Derby Day - March 28 - First post 12:30 p.m.

Race 1: 6-1-9-5

*Not sold on my top pick My Pal Torres, blinkers off for the 1st time.  Will also use the 2-Louisianagentleman in exotics for a price. Stepping up in class but went 9-wide in debut. Broberg's horse on the outside, 10-Even Street could very well show some improvement after rough debut.

Race 2: 1-4-6-8

*Toss up with the 1-4. Love the outside/inside angle with 1-Bold Jazz, but that hose has spit the bit the last two but drops in class for top trainer Tom Amoss. The 6-Vick the Viking has value after an awful debut on March 6 going 1 mile. I left the 9-Fleeting Image off my selections, but will be on my betting ticket.

Race 3: 6-10-7-3

*Tough race but if 6-Ultimo Trago doesn't bounce, he will be tough to beat. 10-Red Strike is on the improve, but is 0-11 at Fair Grounds. Plenty of value in this race and I'll use the 8-Scrumpdilicious on my exotic tickets. Was an easy winner last out & the horse he beat returned to win. Getting 8/1 morning line.

$75,000 Crescent City Oaks - Race 4: 9-2-6-1

*1st of 8 consecutive stakes races and will use 9-Sibiling War. Jockey Gerard Melancon has been on the last two trips, , which were easy wins at Delta including a $100K stakes, but James Graham gets the call and G$ takes the mount on 6-Private Promise. The 1-Forest Lake is super consistent, so don't leave her off and I'll throw in the 8-Pacific Pink and 10-Discreetly Grand for some value.

$75,000 Crescent City Derby - Race 5: 10-9-12-6

*10-Four Leaf Chief will love the added distance. 13-King of Honour may hit the board at a price.

$60,000 Costa Rising Stakes - Race 6: 9-1-8-6

*It's 9-Heitai and everyone else. His former trainer Karl Broberg will have 8-Tallahatchi Luke, who has won the last 2 Allowance optional claiming races, ready to fire for an upset.

$60,000 Star Guitar Stakes - Race 7: 4-1-2-10

*Plenty of early speed in this route race and 4-One King's Man should be rolling late. Interesting note, jockey Miguel Mena who was aboard the last two wins, is not on the mount, but BJ Hernandez Jr. gets the call. Longshot 10-Beauty's Pioneer back on the dirt where he belongs.

$300,000 Grade 2, Mervin Muniz Jr. Handicap - Race 8: 4-2-1-7

*Going with Todd Pletcher's 4-Divine Oath here in this talented race for older horses. Jock Florent Geroux won the last 2 races about the 1-Chocolate Ride, and Alan Garcia is in New Orleans for his only mount of the day with 2-Slumber.

$400,000 Grade 2, Fair Ground Oaks - Race 9: 6-1-7-5

*6-I'm a Chatterbox is a perfect 2-2 at the Fair Grounds including a romp in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra.

$400,000 Grade 2, New Orleans Handicap - Race 10: 5-1-6-7

*Plenty of early speed in this route race and I'll tip-toe in with 5-Moreno, who has all the back-class here.

$750,000 Grade 2, Louisiana Derby - Race 11: 6-5-9-2

*Winner earns a spot in the Kentucky Derby and going with 6-War Story here. Joe Talamo will be the 4th different rider in 5 races aboard this one, who has been beaten by the 9-International Star in their last two starts. Take a look at the 7-Keen Ice. Late runner who has had traffic problems and if clear on the outside, could get a piece of this.

Race 12: 4-6-5-3

*I think it's a 3 horse race here. I love the running style of 2-Laythatpistoldown, but that horse is stepping back up in class and no longer has Miguel Mena in the saddle.

Race 13: 2-3-8-7

*Despite being ML of 8/1, I love 2-Cajun Streaker here. Get's Gerard Melancon in the saddle, but only concern here is the turf breeding. Not a lot of early speed here so G$ could ship this one and try to steal wire to wire.

Race 14: 1-7-8-9

*Leading rider for the meet James Graham should win this one with 1-Voodoo Spell as they've won the last 3 races together.
