Lady Cards get defensive in 67-58 home win over Ole Miss
BEAUMONT, Texas – Monique Whittaker scored 15 points to lead the Lamar University women’s basketball team to a 67-58 win over visiting Ole Miss in a non-conference game Tuesday night.
Freshman Shauna Long came off the bench to score a career-high 10 points for Lamar (2-1), while Danielle Heithoff tied her career high with eight rebounds to go along with 10 points, as Lamar improved to 27-0 in non-conference games in the Montagne Center under Larry Tidwell.
Lamar played a solid defensive game, holding the Rebels (1-1) to just 36.8 percent shooting (25-of-68) from the field. The 58 points is the lowest by a Lamar opponent this season.
Valencia McFarland led Ole Miss with 18 points.
Lamar returns to action at 7 p.m. Friday when it hosts Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m. After that, the Lady Cards hit the road for eight games before returning home to host Centenary on Dec. 30.
"We gave a great defensive effort tonight, especially from Ang Green. She probably played her best defense since she's been here."
"We have a really nice team in the making and I've been waiting on that."
"Shauna Long was locked in tonight. You can't teach court awareness, but she's gonna be a good one. We got to get her in game shape. When Ang & Shauna were put in, their defense set the tone for the rest of the game."
"We left 12 to 15 points on the rim. We can be better and we will get better."
