Lamar football adds 4 recruits

Four football players, featuring three defensive backs with junior college ties, make up Lamar University’s early national signing recruiting class for the 2012 season.

Nashon Davis of Blinn College, Tyrus McGlothen of Cisco Community College and Courtlin Thompson of Saddleback Community College in California are the defensive recruits expected to shore up the Cardinals’ secondary for the 2012 season.

The Cardinals’ other early signee is linebacker Jermaine Longino of Trinity Valley Community College who was voted the 2011 Southwest Junior College Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

“We have secured four very good pickups for our program,” said Ray Woodard, Lamar’s head coach, upon announcing his fourth early Cardinal recruiting class. “We think each one will have an opportunity to make an immediate impact for us.”

Davis is a 6-foot-3, 203-pounder who starred at cornerback on Blinn’s 2009 national junior college championship team.

McGlothen is a 5-8, 180-pound cornerback who was a two-time, first-team All-Southwest Junior College Conference selection while at Cisco CC.

“Thompson is a 6-1, 225-pound defensive back who recorded nine solo tackles and 12 assists for Saddleback CC last season. He also had one interception which he returned for four yards.

Longino is a 5-10, 220-pounder who starred at Houston’s Hightower High School before enrolling at Trinity Valley CC where he went on to earn the SWJCC Defensive Player of the Year award this past season.
