Local instructor earns 5th degree black belt

Mike Berryhill began his journey in Karate in 1991 and some 27 years later, he was awarded a 5th Degree Godan Black Belt on Jan. 13 at his school, Texas Karate Academy, which he opened in 1998.

Berryhill, which will now have Master in front of his name, was presented the promotion by Grand Master Scott Schexnider of Lake Charles and Shihan Scott Messina of Huntsville.

“It was truly on honor to have such high level instructors attend our testing this past Saturday,” said Berryhill. “I’m very proud and honored of this accomplishment. Of course this could of never been possible without the great instructors and staff we have at Texas Karate Academy including Ram Diaz, Cliff Palermo and Marcus Roland. Berryhill added his wife Linh has also been very instrumental in his success.

Also that day, many students of TKA also had rank tests and moved up a level to receive a higher belt.

“We had a very impressive, strong group on this test,” said Berryhill. “A lot of our students where affected by the storm this year and were flooded out of their homes. Many came and volunteered their time and helped us with unloading trucks to help our community in time of need when Harvey hit, but they still found a way to come to class and train.”

Texas Karate Academy is located at 7310 Hwy 105 in Beaumont.
