Local track team medals at Junior Olympics

B.T. Striders Youth Track Club at the 2015 AAU National Junior Olympics

The B.T. Striders Youth Track Club represented Southeast Texas on a national level at the recent 2015 AAU National Junior Olympics in Norfolk, Virginia. Fifteen athletes from this local team competed in this year’s event, which took place on the Norfolk State University campus from Aug 1-8. The event hosted 11,865 athletes representing 43 States, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico.

All 15 athletes performed well, with two racewalkers reaching the medal stand. Miriah Westbrooks placed fourth in the 1500M Racewalk (Girls 12-year old division) and Lauryn Harper placed eighth in the 1500M Racewalk (Girls 9-year old division).

Competing against some of the best athletes in the nation, other B.T. Strider performances were also exceptional. Jeffery Hulon finished 10th nationally in the Young Men 17-18 year-old 200M Dash and 13th nationally in 100M Dash. Laterra Satcher finished 9th nationally in the Girls 10-year-old 1500M Racewalk and Majesty Wilder finished 11th nationally in the Girls 11-year-old 1500M Racewalk.

Three of the B.T. Striders achieved personal records during the event. They were Jeffery Hulon clocking 21.6 sec in the 200M Dash, Amari Rodgers at 5:42.13 in the 13 year-old 1500M Run, and Miriah Westbrooks racewalked 9:24.67 in 1500M Racewalk.

The 2015 AAU National Junior Olympics was an impressive event for athletes and spectators. Notably, 31 national records were broken this year.

“I am very proud of the way the athletes handled themselves,” said Jeff Hulon, who coaches the B.T. Striders along with his wife, Patricia Hulon. “The athletes implemented the racing strategies that they developed in practice and executed them very well in the high-pressure conditions of competing on a national level in front of some very large crowds. They deserved to be there, and they represented Southeast Texas very well.”

Coach Jeff Hulon added, “I would like to thank our kids for being so determined, staying on task and having fun all at the same time. In addition, I want to thank the B.T. Striders parents and other entities in Southeast Texas who have supported the B.T. Striders all year long. This is truly a fine example of youth exemplifying positive images and living out some very big dreams.
