Soccer season begins this weekend for Cardinals

The 2018 soccer season will open this weekend for last year’s Southland Conference champion Lamar Cardinals. LU will host Grambling on Friday, Aug. 17, at 7 p.m. and the University of Houston on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The Cards won an exhibition game Aug. 8 against Rice, 3-2.

The team was recently picked to repeat as the Southland Conference regular-season champion. Lamar earned 20 first-place votes and 240 total points to garner the top spot. The Cards are coming off a championship campaign that saw them win the Southland regular-season title with a 10-1 league record, followed by their first ever league tournament crown. This came just one year after a last-place finish in 2016, where Lamar finished 1-7-3 in conference play. This marked the first time in Southland soccer history a team went from last place to first in one season.

The Southland Conference announced the 2018 Soccer Preseason All-Conference Teams, and Lamar led the way with four total selections, including three spots on the First Team.

The Cards earned three automatic first team selections in senior defender Amelia Fullmer, senior forward Kelso Peskin, and sophomore forward Lucy Ashworth.

Peskin led LU in scoring in 2017 with 27 points on eight goals and a school-record 11 assists. She was a 2017 first-team All-Southland Conference selection and a member of the 2017 United Soccer Coaches All-Region team.

Fullmer led all LU field players with over 2,000 minutes played. She was a second team All-SLC selection in 2017 and a third team member of the 2017 United Soccer Coaches All-Region.

Ashworth, a member of the 2017 All-SLC first team as a freshman, was second on the Cardinals in scoring with four goals and eight assists for 16 points. Ashworth joined Fullmer on the USC All-Region third team.

Making the All-SLC Preseason Second Team for the first time was senior midfielder Julie Ocampo. The Bogota, Colombia, native appeared in all 23 games with 22 starts. She had career highs of 13 points, including a career best five goals, in 2017 and tied for the team lead with three game-winning goals.
