Football championships head back to Arlington

All University Interscholastic League (UIL) football state championship games will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington for the next two years, including the 11-man and six-man football championship games.

The new schedule places all 12 games in a four-day span, from Dec. 14-17.

Last season, the 6A-1A state title games were held in Houston at NRG Stadium, home of the Houston Texans.

“The UIL Football State Championships will be bigger and better than ever this year at AT&T Stadium, with all 12 games in the same week in one location,” said UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt. “The UIL is excited to showcase the best high school football in Texas at AT&T Stadium during the football finals for an outstanding championship experience.”

The UIL has determined the site of the largest conference state championships since 2006, and all conferences have played at pre-determined locations since 2010. AT&T Stadium hosted all 11-man championship games from 2011-14.

“For more than four decades, the Dallas Cowboys have enjoyed a wonderful relationship with the UIL and high school football teams all over the state of Texas,” said Cowboys Chief Operating Officer Stephen Jones. “We are proud to have the games coming back to the city of Arlington and AT&T Stadium where many more memories will be made.”

WWE pro wrestler to host ESPN ESPYS

The ESPYS have become one of the most popular award shows as they commemorate the past year in sports by recognizing major achievements, reliving unforgettable moments, and saluting the leading performers and performances.

Produced by ESPN, this year’s ESPYS, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles and hosted by WWE superstar/pro wrestler John Cena, will be broadcast live on ABC on Wednesday, July 13, at 7 p.m.

“It is truly an honor to be named host of the 2016 ESPYS,” said Cena. “Not only will the biggest names in sports and entertainment come together to recognize some of the most spectacular athletic performances of the year, but we’ll also raise funds for The V Foundation to further much-needed cancer research.”

The ESPYS raise more than $1 million annually for The V Foundation, the charity founded by ESPN and the late basketball coach Jim Valvano to promote cancer research.

Cena, a 15-time WWE world champion, is also currently hosting and is the executive producer of American Grit, a new military-inspired competition series on FOX, and has appeared in hit big-screen comedies Trainwreck and Sisters.

Cena devotes much of his time working on behalf of numerous charitable causes. He is Make-A-Wish’s most requested wish granter of all time and the only celebrity to grant 500 wishes. Cena is also committed to Susan G. Komen and its support of breast cancer research and awareness, and is a longtime supporter of the U.S. military, recently recognized by USO Metro as the recipient of their 2016 Legacy of Achievement Award.

“John is not only a superstar athlete and entertainer, but also a motivational force who inspires fans across the globe,” said ESPYS executive producer Maura Mandt. “John approaches all of his endeavors with energy, enthusiasm and passion, so we expect him to bring a new level of excitement to the night’s celebration.”
