Longtime HS football referee retiring

High school football referee T.C. Welch is retiring from officiating the sport after 41 years. In 1975, Welch joined the Beaumont Chapter of what would become the Texas Association of Sports Officials and eventually became the chief referee of his own crew and officiated six Mid-County Madness games. Welch’s current crew consists of Tim Summers (umpire), who will take over the crew next season, Tommy Butler (line judge), Marc Ochoa (head linesman) and Lane Stuart (back judge). Welch said he’ll miss the game but looks forward to traveling around the country.

PN-G baseball/softball will get turf

Port Neches-Groves ISD approved spending as much as $1.8 million to install artificial turf on both the baseball and softball fields. Construction will begin Oct. 24 and is schedule to be finished by Jan. 20, 2017.

Softball practice begins Jan. 20, and the season begins Feb. 13. Baseball practice starts Jan. 27, and games begin Feb. 20.

Half marathon

The Neighbors Emergency Center Port Arthur location (3330 Highway 365) is sponsoring the 2016 Neighbors Emergency Center Pleasure Island Bridge Half Marathon and 10K on Saturday, Nov. 5. There is also a 2-mile run, which is sponsored by Kinsel Ford. All races begin at 7:30 a.m.

This exciting event draws thousands of participants from Southeast Texas. Port Arthur’s Pleasure Island, an 18.5-mile-long man-made body of land, extends from the mouth of the Neches River on the northwest to the Sabine Causeway on the southeast and is surrounded by Sabine Lake and the Sabine Neches Intracoastal Waterway. Half Marathon and 10K participants will take on the challenge of the MLK Jr. Bridge at 5,032 feet in length and 138 feet above the Sabine-Neches Canal.

Registration fee is $90 for the “Bridge Half,” $50 for the 10K, and $25 for the Kinsel 2-mile. 

Neighbors Port Arthur supports this event in the national fight against obesity. Besides being the named race sponsor, Neighbors Emergency Center Port Arthur will also have a booth at the event and will be unofficial race day photographers. Everyone is invited to stop by the Neighbors booth and have a picture taken following the race.

Race participants who wear their official race shirt during the run can enter in a raffle for items including a Yeti Cooler and a FitBit at the Neighbors booth.

Kennidee Willis

Deweyville senior volleyball star Kennidee Willis surpassed the 2,000 career kill mark Oct. 18 with a 13-kill night in Deweyville’s 3-0 district win over Sabine Pass. Willis is an all-state player and was one of 300 volleyball players in the United States to be invited to participate in the Under Armour Phenom Clinic in Omaha, Nebraska, held during the NCAA Volleyball National Championships.
