Williams wins easy in 2nd pro MMA fight

Beaumont native Cody Williams spent eight long weeks training at American Top Team-Beaumont for his second career professional MMA fight — and it paid off with a 1st round knockout. It took Williams just 1:05 into the 1st round to get his job done on opponent Nate Garza at Legacy Fighting Championship 8 inside Houston’s Arena Theatre on Sept. 16.

After opening the fight with a leg kick, the 27-year-old fighter connected with a right, which made Garza take a few steps back. Williams then landed another solid leg kick and threw a four-punch combination as one of the punches landed to the right side of Garza’s face and sent him down to the mat. Williams had no time to charge because the referee stopped the fight.

“I swung really hard and caught him with an overhand right,” said Williams, who improves to 2-0. “I landed a couple of good leg kicks then went in with a combo. It was over.”

Williams threw his hand up in the air and headed to the section of the cage, which pointed in the direction where hundreds of his family, friends and supporters made the drive to watch him. He hopped on top of the octagon to give them a yell.

“It was pure euphoric,” described Williams. “After eight weeks of rigorous training and to see it payoff, it was all worth it.”

Garza, 3-5, never landed a punch on Williams, but the quick finish was not a shock to Williams.

“I felt more prepared coming into this fight than the first, which I also won,” said Williams. “It has a lot to do with experience and I was able to take a lot from the first fight and apply it to this camp.”

Williams said next up could come against Steve Garcia (8-4) in December for Legacy Fighting Championships, but it’s just a wait and see.

“I’m going to take a few days off,” said Williams. “Then I’ll start training again.”
