Some really good stuff is in store for both hunters and fishermen this week in East and Southeast Texas.

First of all, we’ve got a Canadian front moving through this weekend with some pretty cold temperatures. That front will be moving plenty of ducks and geese into Southeast Texas. It’ll also jumpstart the rut in the Pineywoods.

Up 2-0 at the break, all Lamar University volleyball needed was one more set win to lock a spot in the Southland Conference Tournament, but Incarnate Word flipped the script at the intermission to down the hometown Cardinals 3-2 (25-21, 37-35, 20-25, 23-25, 11-15) at McDonald Gym on Nov. 19.

The loss and Southeastern Louisiana’s win over New Orleans eliminated the Cardinals from tournament contention.

Texas has a whitetail deer population in excess of 4 million.

The Saturday, Nov. 5, deer season opener across Texas will be hot to go, as in sweating hot, thanks to unseasonably mild weather. However, bucks in East and Central Texas are in the rut, and it’s a sure thing that this is the time to be in a stand and on point for a shot at what might be the buck of a lifetime.

Big slot reds like this one are being caught under the birds on Sabine Lake.

Good catches of reds and flounder continue to make a whole lot of anglers happy on Sabine Lake. Reds are busting the surface under the birds, trout are beginning to show up under flocks of gulls, and flounder are excellent on the upper end of the lake along the shorelines in 1 to 3 feet of water.

A 22-yard scoring strike from Carson Earp to DeWan Thompson with six seconds on the clock handed the Lamar University football its most thrilling victory since bringing back the program at the start of the 2010 season. Trailing by as many as 13 points with less than two minutes remaining, LU (3-3, 3-1 Southland Conference) scored two touchdowns in the final 1:43 of the contest to record the victory over Northwestern State, 32-31, on Oct. 15 at Provost Umphrey Stadium.
