Professional bass angler Bryan Thrift celebrates after winning the Toyota Texas

The weather was horrible with a combination of a cold front, high winds and rain. Those are three things that will give bass anglers nightmares. Even with the wacky weather, North Carolina angler Bryan Thrift managed a final catch of five bass weighing 25 pounds during last weekend’s Toyota Texas Bass Classic held on Lake Conroe, and reeled in a whopping first-place prize of $150,000. Thrift finished with a three-day total of 15 bass weighing 53 pounds, 4 ounces.

Unless you were a coach on the Lamar staff or one of the players, you probably thought the Cardinals had a small chance of beating Louisiana-Lafayette last Saturday in the college football season opener. I mean, UL plays in the bigger Football Bowl Subdivision won a bowl game last season. No way, right? What we didn’t expect to see were a plethora of mistakes which led to many easy points and short drives for UL. The 13 points yielded by Lamar in the first quarter came on drives no longer than six plays each.

The Houston Cougars nearly had an undefeated season, but 13-1 and beating Penn State 30-14 in the TicketCity Bowl was a great way to finish last year. Days after Houston’s only loss, coach Kevin Sumlin departed for College Station and Tony Levine was promoted to interim coach, then led the Coogs to their bowl win. The school took the interim tag off and named Levine the new head coach.

It seems odd that just four seasons ago, the Rice Owls finished the season 10-3 and defeated Western Michigan 38-14 in the Texas Bowl in 2008. It was one of their best seasons to date and only their fifth bowl win in school history. But now with head coach David Bailiff entering his sixth season at Rice, he has just one winning season while there. Most don’t expect the Owls to win seven or eight games each year, but Rice fans expect more than what has been taking place down on Main Street.

New coach, new conference and even new uniforms — the Texas A&M Aggies are finally out of the shadow of the University of Texas. The team lost four of its last five regular season games, and parted with coach Mike Sherman, hiring Kevin Sumlin from the University of Houston. The Aggies did manage to end the season on a high note as they defeated Northwestern 33-22 in the Meineke Car Care Bowl.
