Lamar sophomore Nikita Lis had to fight his way through a couple of three-set matches to earn a berth in the Cardinals’ Ron Wesbrooks Flight One Singles Championship against Texas-Pan American’s Juan Cruz-Soria.

The new black-painted helmets didn’t help Lamar against Sam Houston State as the Cardinals were blown out at home in their Southland Conference opener by the score of 42-10 in front of announced crowd of 9,308.

Little Cypress Mauriceville High School’s Vicki Castino was named the Golf Coach of the Year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association in Arlington earlier this summer. Castino has been head girls’ coach at LC-M for 20 years, and during that span, her teams have won the District title 12 times, been a regional qualifier 16 times and reached the state tournament once.

It was a good week for Lamar athletes as senior Leigh Lattimore was named the Southland Conference Women’s Cross-Country Athlete of the Week, and seniors Kimmy Albeno and Bailey Fontenot swept the SLC Soccer Players of the Week.

The Lamar football team hosts the Mississippi College Choctaws (0-2) on Saturday at 7 p.m. LU is 16-11 (.593) at home since the return of football, but is 0-1 all-time against Mississippi College.

All youth football players who show up in uniform will get in for free. The first 1,000 fans will get Lamar megaphones, and the first 400 will also get Lamar replica jerseys.

Last Saturday, LU hung 73 on Texas College while putting up 561 yards of offense to improve to 2-1 on the year.

It’s a pretty common occurrence in college football — schedule teams that you know you can beat. They all do it, year in and year out. But many teams have that luxury.

Take, for instance, Texas A&M. The Aggies play in arguably the toughest conference in all of football — the Southeastern Conference. So their non-conference schedule this season includes Lamar, Rice, SMU and University of Louisiana-Monroe. The reason is because their conference schedule includes LSU, Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Mississippi State, Missouri and Ole Miss.
