SETCA Class of 2017 Hall of Fame

The Southeast Texas Coaches Association will host its annual luncheon and introduce the SETCA Class of 2017 Hall of Fame on Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Holiday Inn on Walden Road. The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m., and tickets can be purchased at the door for $10.

K.J. Miller earns preseason status

Fresh off winning a state championship with West Orange-Stark football, senior K.J. Miller was chosen as an Under Armour Preseason All-American baseball player after performing in front of scouts at the Pirate City Christmas Camp in Florida.

Miller will next attend a camp Jan. 13 in Arizona at the Chicago Cubs Spring Training Facility.

As an infielder, Miller hit .500 last year for the Mustang baseball team.

Junior Colton Weisbrod netted a career-high 34 points to lead Lamar to a 74-54 victory over Southeastern Louisiana on Jan. 7 at the Montagne Center. The Cardinals (10-6/2-1 Southland) trailed for a grand total of 13 seconds on their way to a rout of the Lions.

Duck hunting is definitely not everybody’s cup of tea.

Whatever it is that makes people want to go duck hunting is beyond the wildest imagination of most folks with a sane mind. Here’s how it works on the average hunt. The alarm goes off at 4 a.m. or earlier, and you get up, put on camouflaged clothing and head out the door. By the time you actually get to where you’ll be hunting, it’s cold, dark and wet. So what do we do? Pull on a pair of waders and head out into boot-sucking mud, toss out several dozen decoys, load the gun and hope the birds show up.

It is finally starting to sink in. Lamar University has a new head football coach in Mike Schultz, who has one of the best offensive minds in all of college football. Schultz was formally introduced Dec. 22 at a press conference in front of a packed room filled with Lamar faculty and fans.
