Saturday night will be a first for many things concerning the sport Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). For starters, Nutty Jerry’s Entertainment Complex in Winnie will host their first MMA event when the IXFA comes to town on April 23 and 26-year-old Cody Williams will make his professional debut when he steps inside the cage to fight Gerzan Chaw of Houston.

Williams will also carry the tag of being the first MMA fighter from Beaumont to become a pro competitor. The area is known for producing pro boxers, but Southeast Texas has yet to have a pro MMA fighter until now.

Lamar University will open its 2011 football schedule on Sept. 3 with a home game against Texas College, a member of the Texas State Football League.

Texas College, which went 1-9 overall and 1-4 in the TSFL last season, replaces Langston University on the previously-released 2011 Lamar football schedule. Coach Ray Woodard’s Cardinals defeated Langston 14-0 in their homecoming game last season.

The Southeast Texas Mavericks announced today that they will be leaving the American Basketball Association immediately.

Three seasons as a member of the ABA, the Mavericks won their division each year, had a 30-game win streak and won consecutive ABA league titles.

"It has just become apparent to us that we need to be in a pro basketball league that gives us a greater challenge on a consistent basis," said Mavericks general manager/head coach Steve Tucker.

More than 1,000 supporters  of horse racing and greyhound racing including those from Sam Houston Race Park, Retama Park and Lone Star Park, rallied at the State Capitol in Austin on March 31 to support House Bill 2111, which would allow slot machines at licensed racetracks (horse, greyhound) and Indian Reservations in Texas.

Two other pieces of legislation, SJR 33 and HJR 111, were also spoken of. Those would allow a vote by the public to put slot machines on racetracks.
