A gaming ordinance tabled at last week’s Beaumont City Council meeting passed unanimously on Tuesday, June 10, with a few changes.

Officials with the City of Beaumont are moving quickly to curb a massive, seemingly unforeseen increase in the city’s healthcare spending.

According to Chief Financial Officer Laura Clark, this year’s city healthcare spending jumped some $3 million since last year.

To combat the ever-pressing problem of deteriorating city streets and public facilities, Beaumont City Council members approved a sizable cash infusion Tuesday, June 25 — some $43 million in borrowed money.

The city of Beaumont is some $18 million richer after the Southeast Texas Regional Planning Commission signed and approved the last round of Hurricane Ike funding more than four years after the storm ravaged Beaumont and the surrounding areas.

Capital Projects Manager Brenda Beadle said the money will go to a number of infrastructure and city services projects, including a state-of-the-art fire station on Helbig Road.
